  • Hannah Mercurio

    DVM

    Dr. Mercurio received her B.S. from the University of Delaware and graduated with her veterinary degree in 2008 from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. During veterinary school she developed strong interests in animal behavior and welfare. She conducted an independent study comparing two lifting methods in weaning pigs. This manuscript was published in the December 2008 edition of the Journal of Veterinary Behavior: Clinical Applications and Research. She was a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellow, receiving support for her work evaluating visceral tumors with ultrasound in sea turtles. She also received funding for a community outreach program in Puerto Rico focusing on educating children about animal care, and providing low-cost veterinary health care clinics in collaboration with local veterinarians. Dr. Mercurio was very active in student organizations during veterinary school, including the Student Association for Global Awareness, the Student Initiative for Animal Welfare and was one of the founding members of the College's first diversity committee. She was also a supervisor for an emergency relief kennel at the University of Georgia for dogs displaced by Hurricane Katrina. After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Mercurio completed a small animal rotating internship at the Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC. While there, she gained experience in emergency medicine, specialty care and was involved with a large primary care caseload. During her internship, she also developed a special interest in dental care and further explored her interest in behavioral medicine. Following her internship, Dr. Mercurio served for 2 years as a clinical instructor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbus, OH. There she practiced compassionate and cutting edge wellness and primary care while giving clinical instruction to senior veterinary students.

  • Caitlin Fitzgerald

    DVM

    Dr. Caitlin Fitzgerald grew up close by, in Queens, NY. Her initial animal-interests were focused in zoo medicine. Dr. Fitzgerald spent several summers working in the Bronx Zoo's bird department and in their health care center. She received her undergraduate degree in animal science from Cornell University. After graduation, Dr. Fitzgerald worked as a veterinary assistant for two years and spent some time helping with avian-behavior research in Texas. She then went on to veterinary school at Western University of Health Sciences(Pomona, California), where there was a strong emphasis on problem-based learning from the first year. During veterinary school, Dr. Fitzgerald helped to restart the International Veterinary Student's Association (IVSA) as an active chapter in her school. As part of IVSA, she attended international veterinary student conferences in South Africa and Grenada and also helped plan diversity events at her school. During those conferences, she not only experienced the wildlife of those countries, but she also attended lectures at their local veterinary schools. She graduated from Western University in 2012, receiving her DVM, and spent the next year at a rigorous rotating internship at the Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center of Westbury. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Fitzgerald enjoys hanging out with her dog, Odie, dancing, and traveling.

  • Christine Handlin

    Dr Christine Handlin has been both a part time and full time Veterinarian with VCA for 14 years. Dr Handling was raised on Long Island and received. her BS in Biology from Fordham University. While attending Fordham, she worked as primary caretaker and trainer of the Capuchin Monkeys for the. Helping Hands organization, which provides Capuchin Monkey aides to quadriplegics. Her work for Helping Hands holds a special place in her heart. In addition,. Dr. Handlin trained monkeys for the thriller movie "Monkey Shines". Dr Handlin received her DVM from the University of Missouri where she was a member of the Omega Tau Sigma academic fraternity and graduated with honors. . She worked in the pathology lab and as a veterinary assistant while in veterinary school. She enjoyed her varied experiences and met many wonderful people in. Missouri. Following veterinary school, Dr Handlin worked in general practice as well as in a 24 hour emergency facility. Currently, Dr Handlin practices general medicine and . surgery at Glen Animal Hospital. She is a member of the AVMA and is USDA accredited. Outside the office, Dr Handlin is an active volunteer as hte daughters' school. and serves as Parents Club President. She enjoys being outdoors and relaxing doing yga, but her favorite thing is spending time with her husband, 2 beautiful. daughters, her Italian Greyhound, turtle and gecko. .
